The Gift
epoxy resin, red satin bow,
black velvet jewelry box
8.2 x 9.2 x 9.6 cm [3.2 x 3.6 x 3.8 in]
A resin finger is wrapped in a red satin bow and presented inside a black velvet jewelry box. It’s a gift. The absurd gesture of offering a small part of the body to someone is crowned here by the simplicity of a bow, making the piece a meeting place between the macabre and the docile, the somber and the courteous.
In different historical-cultural contexts, heads and other body parts were offered as proof of service, souvenir, trophy, demonstration of power, or other odd reasons. Enemy heads were served on golden platters or held by the hair, fingers offered to superiors, ear fragments as gifts, locks of hair and teeth kept as recordings of time.
