In the video all fixed, fast-frozen, the classic magic trick known as “cups and balls” is reinterpreted using ice. As the magician makes the small spheres disappear and reappear before the camera, a voice whispers words that both describe the actions taking place and evoke the jargon of the financial market. Terms such as inflation, bubble, burn rate, liquidity, freeze, melting, bet, speculation, burst, and even Karl Marx’s famous phrase — “All that is solid melts into air” — create overlapping layers of meaning, linking the dynamics of illusion to those of speculation. The work also references Bliz-aard Ball Sale (1983), the iconic performance by David Hammons in which the American artist sold snowballs on the streets of New York in winter.
